The Jamaican government has announced a
stimulus package to jump-start sagging sales and hence revenue for the
government’s coffers, in the once thriving motor vehicle trade, where the sale of
new vehicles is down as much as forty percent.
Information Minister Daryl Vaz told
journalists at a Post-cabinet media briefing September 9, 2009 that under the stimulus package
there will be significant reductions in import duties on motor cars, sports
utility vehicles and pickups.
In the cars and SUVs category import duties
have been reduced by percentage points ranging from nineteen percentage points
for 1,000 CC to 1,600 CC vehicles to 62 percentage points for vehicles from
2,000 CCs to 3,200 CCs.
In the pickups category the import duties
have been reduced by as much as fifty-four percentage points.
The move is expected to rejuvenate the
motor vehicle sector which has endured twin-shocks from failing unregulated
financial schemes as well as the impact of the global recession on Jamaica.
