Brewery company Red Stripe has officially
confirmed our earlier story on possible senior job cuts in Jamaica. The company revealed to the Jamaica Stock Exchange April 17, 2009 that two senior positions were being "re-defined", a euphemism for being made redundant. These are the positions of Director of Marketing and Head of Corporate Relations. The casualties are two well respected executives of Red Stripe : Wayne Lawrence and Maxine Whittingham. Diageo - Red Stripe's parent company plans to leverage its wider Caribbean marketing and Corporate relations to fill the vacuum left by Maxine and Wayne. Director of Corporate Affairs, Noel DaCosta is retiring but will continue to serve on D&G's board in a non-executive capacity. DaCosta has served the company with distinction for over two decades. Export Director of International Marketing, Grace Silvera, who successfully spearheaded Red Stripe's export thrust into North America, has been given an expanded role. In addition to North America, Miss Silvera will be responsible for Europe, Asia and Africa. Diageo's Red Stripe did fairly well in the export market, particularly North America with six-month sales to December 31, 2008, increasing by eighteen percent. However during the same period, domestic sales were down eighteen percent - hit by the fall in disposable income among Jamaicans. All the changes are scheduled to become effective July1, 2009.
