Cabinet Minister resigns Print E-mail
joseph_hibbert.jpgFollowing allegations of bribery of Jamaican officials by the British construction company Mabey and Johnson Limited, Jamaica House announced the shock resignation of the junior minister in Jamaica's Ministry of Transport and Works, Joseph Hibbert on July 14, 2009.

In a tersely worded statement, Jamaica House said Hibbert's resignation followed a meeting with Prime Minister Bruce Golding July 13, 2009.

According to Hibbert, "in view of the allegations of  bribery of Jamaican government officials made in the United Kingdom courts by the British firm Mabey and Johnson Limited in which I am implicated, I have today decided to submit my resignation as Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport and Works to the Honourable Prime Minister."

Hibbert says the resignation will allow him time to clear his name and integrity as a former Chief Technical Director in the Ministry of Transport and Works during the 1990s, to which the allegations refer.

The Mabey and Johnson affair is one of the biggest business scandals in the U.K. in recent times and is seen as the British Labour Government's attempt to shed the moniker of being soft on corruption.

The British company is alleged to have bribed overseas officials to get contacts in several developing countries.
