Injury aborts Chavez's visit Print E-mail

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez won’t be coming to Jamaica for the island’s independence celebrations as planned.

Jamaica House says the president’s visit has been cancelled because of an injury he sustained while participating in a softball game Sunday August 2, 2009.

President Chavez was scheduled to visit St Vincent and the Grenadines before traveling onward to Jamaica. The governments of Jamaica and Venezuela are already discussing a new date for President Chavez to visit Jamaica.

President Chavez was invited to Jamaica by Prime Minister Bruce Golding during the Petro Caribe Summit in St Kitts-Nevis in June.  The Petro Caribe agreement is an accord between Venezuela and some Caribbean countries under which oil-rich Venezuela sells oil to them under concessionary terms.
